How to Plan Your Interior Remodel (Fresno Homeowner's Guide) — Fresno remodeling article cover

You've decided that your Fresno home needs to be remodeled but you don't know where to start or what information is necessary before the hammer can start to swing. Don't worry — you'll find out how to plan your remodel whether it's one bathroom, your kitchen, or the whole house. We'll focus on what you want the finished space to look like, whether any structural part of the home will be altered, and how it can fit within your schedule.

Choosing Finishes

The very first thing to decide is what you want the area to look like once it's completed. Will the flooring change? Are there enough lights in this room? What kind of countertops and cabinets will look the best? Having a clear idea of what finishes you'll want will help define the timeline. Certain items may take a few weeks to arrive, so it would be best to hold off on the start date until all or most of the materials are on site. Other details such as flooring patterns, fixture heights and locations can be decided in the meantime. Getting ahead of lead times can decrease the down time of your space.

Timeframe

Once all the finishes are decided, a schedule can be created for your interior remodel. The start date will depend on when materials can arrive. Removal of existing flooring, fixtures, etc., framing, rough plumbing and electrical will be the first phases placed on schedule. After the rough stages, we can start closing walls, texturing, installing doors and start moving into the finish phases. Wall and ceiling paint, flooring and millwork installation transitions into finish countertops, fixtures and hardware.

Typical timelines we see on Central Valley projects:

  • Guest bathroom — 2 to 3 weeks
  • Kitchen or master bathroom — 4 to 5 weeks (depending on scope)
  • Full house remodel — 2+ months

Having these timelines can help you plan the downtime of your necessary space to cook, shower the kids, and when you can plan for visitors. As always, some time should be allotted for unforeseen circumstances.

Choosing the Right Contractor

There are many contractors out there — how will you know to choose the right one? When you're meeting with different companies, make sure you ask the right questions and verify everything they tell you.

  • Ask for their contractor's license number
  • Confirm they are bonded and carry workers' comp insurance
  • Verify their license through the Contractors' State License Board (CSLB)
  • Ask for proof of quality — a website, social media, or portfolio of past projects
  • Ask about their experience with permitted work
  • During the walk-through, gauge whether you'll be comfortable with this contractor making your vision a reality
